We’ve earned our Plastic Negative Certification by funding rePurpose Global to remove and recover 2x as much plastic waste from the environment as our products and operations create. Now every one of our products carries a beyond Net Zero Plastic Footprint!
Since Reverie’s inception in 2011, we have been dedicated to sustainability - for people and for the planet. Sustainability is not linear. For us, it encompasses caring for the land in how our ingredients are grown, using ingredients that do not harm waterways (or people!), supporting the welfare of the workers who help bring our products to life, and being mindful of our products and the packaging they are housed in. As humans and brand owners, we are constantly evolving and improving - never satisfied with status quo. As a brand with a physical product, there is no way to get around the fact that we create physical matter that must be disposed at some point.
We make every effort to ensure that our packaging is made from widely accepted, 100% recyclable materials that can be disposed of through municipal recycling services. Our partnership with rePurpose Global allows us to go even further to fund the removal of more ocean-bound waste than we produce as a company. By going Plastic Negative, we are not only tackling a $30bn/yr funding gap that plagues recycling supply chains worldwide, but are also endorsing a crucial income stream for waste workers and their families in Goa, India.
Despite providing a crucial societal service for cities across the developing world, informal waste workers often earn less than $5/day, work in precarious conditions, and face severe discrimination. Through this initiative, REVERIE is boosting these waste workers’ incomes by attaching value to hard-to-recycle plastics, while promoting experienced recycling social enterprises who holistically uplift waste workers through occupational safety, health insurance, and skills training.
Our direct Impact Project is Saaf Samudra located in Goa, India. Project Saaf Samudra (साफ़ समुद्र) is a collaboration between rePurpose Global and V-Recycle - one of India's most trusted waste management innovators. Your Plastic Credit contributions enable us to finance the recovery of ocean-bound low-value plastic MLP (multi-layered packaging) waste. This process works by waste workers collecting plastic waste directly from households and commercial areas, catching the plastic before it can leak out into the environment. In setting up this supply chain, we are providing an additional income stream to waste workers, aiding their access to better education and health care.
After collecting MLP, waste workers will segregate, clean, and transport the plastic to cement kilns for co-processing. As this type of plastic cannot be recycled, the best environmental option, as prescribed by the United Nations Basel Convention, is co-processing. During this operation energy is recovered from the plastic and the remaining waste is effectively disposed of without creating harmful emissions. They will then extract some of the minerals in the plastic waste to be used in creating cement. Not only does this initiative dispose of un-recyclable plastic waste without sending them to landfills, but it also reduces the usage of coal in the cement manufacturing process, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
